Biological value of Lecithin

It supplies choline necessary to make the neurotransmitter acetylcholine important for brain and nerve function.

Choline is used in the liver to help our body appropriately utilize fats.

It is made from soybean oil (Sunflower seed oil) which contains both essential fatty acids (EFA’s), Omega 6: Omega 3 fatty acids.

However, since soybeans are genetically modified I recommend using lecithin that’s derived from sunflower seed oil.  Genetic strains of soybeans have less of the essential fatty acids compared to the natural strains.

Lecithin acts as an edible detergent which breaks up fats into suspensions of smaller droplets, in other words it emulsifies fats. Lecithin is an important component of bile. Bile which is secreted by the gallbladder functions to break food fats into smaller droplets emulsify them, to increase their surface area, speeding up the digestion of fats by enzymes.

Lecithin’s Functions

Lecithin keeps cholesterols soluble. It is important that lecithin be of high quality.

Lecithin keeps:

·   Cholesterol isolated from arterial linings,

·   Protects Low density lipoproteins (LDL) from oxidation

·   Prevents and dissolves gall and kidney stones by its emulsifying action on fatty substances.

Lecithin is important for our livers detoxification functions

·   Poor liver function is a common forerunner of cancer

Lecithin increases resistance to infections by its role in our thymus gland. Lecithin being an essential fatty acid acts as a precursor of several prostaglandins as well as being a vital part of our immune cells ability to kill bacteria. Fatty acid peroxides are used to produce bacteriocidal hydrogen peroxide.

Lecithin is a phospholipid that makes up 22% of both the high density (HDL) and low density lipoprotein (LDL). These vehicles keep cholesterol and triglyceride fats in solution in our bloodstream and carried them to and from all parts of our body.

Lecithin is not an essential nutrient. Our body can make it, provided that sufficient EFA’s, choline, and phosphate are present in the foods we eat.

However, for those who had their gallbladders removed a “cholecystectomy,” Knowing how to take lecithin and digestive enzymes as well as essential fatty acids in the appropriate dosages can help improve many digestive ailments.
