Welcome to the Health Quest blog, where we align our health practices with God's design for vibrant living. I’m Dr. Sal, a practicing surgeon for over 30 years. My mission is to empower you with knowledge that transforms your mind, body, and spirit.
Today’s topic is powerful, timely, and life-changing: the Ketogenic Diet — and why it’s a crucial tool in fighting obesity, chronic disease, and even Alzheimer’s.
Why Our Modern Diet Is Failing Us
Alzheimer’s disease has been called Type 3 Diabetes because of its strong connection to sugar consumption. In fact, the United States, with its high-sugar diet, leads the world in Alzheimer’s and dementia cases per capita. It's clear: the way we eat is drastically impacting the way we live — and die.
Obesity now affects 42% of Americans, with 70% classified as overweight. These rates aren't just about appearance; they are directly tied to rising cases of high blood pressure, diabetes, and heart disease.
The truth? The modern diet — rich in sugar and processed foods — is slowly but surely destroying our health.
What Is the Ketogenic Diet?
The ketogenic diet is a high-fat, moderate-protein, and low-carbohydrate way of eating:
55–60% fat
30–35% protein
5–10% carbohydrates
In a 2,000-calorie daily intake, this translates to just 20–50 grams of carbohydrates a day.
This is not a "fad diet." In fact, the ketogenic approach dates back to the 1920s, when Dr. Russell Wilder first used it to successfully treat epilepsy. The Romans even used fasting — which induces ketosis — to manage seizures long before modern medicine understood why it worked.
When carbohydrates are drastically reduced, the body transitions from using glucose (sugar) as its primary fuel source to using ketones, which are derived from fat. This process, called ketosis, turns your body into a fat-burning, energy-producing machine.
How the Ketogenic Diet Heals
When you enter ketosis, incredible things begin to happen:
Lower blood sugar and insulin levels: Reducing sugar intake dramatically improves insulin sensitivity.
Fat burning increases: Your body becomes efficient at burning stored fat for energy.
Enhanced energy production: Ketones produce more ATP (energy) than glucose.
Brain health improves: Ketones cross the blood-brain barrier, fueling your brain with clean energy.
Inflammation decreases: Ketones reduce oxidative stress and help repair cellular damage.
Cognitive function strengthens: A ketogenic state improves brain clarity, sharpness, and memory.
This is why keto is being studied (and applied) for improving conditions like Alzheimer’s, dementia, epilepsy, obesity, diabetes, and even cancer.
The Transition: What to Expect
Switching from a high-carb to a high-fat diet isn’t instant. It usually takes a few weeks for your body to adapt. Initially, you may experience:
Fatigue
Brain fog
Headaches
This is normal and often referred to as the "keto flu." Once your body adjusts, you’ll notice higher energy, greater mental clarity, and better physical performance — all while burning fat more efficiently.
Important Tip: While in ketosis, you may test positive on breathalyzer tests due to the production of acetone (a byproduct of ketosis). Be mindful if you're driving!
Debunking the Fat Myth
Many still believe that dietary fat causes obesity and heart disease, but research tells a different story.
In reality:
The type of fat matters. Natural fats (like butter, coconut oil, nuts, and fish oil) are beneficial.
Processed carbohydrates and trans fats are the real villains, fueling obesity, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease.
Traditional societies, like the Inuit, who consume high-fat diets (whale fat and fish oil), show extremely low rates of heart disease and stroke.
Low-fat diets of the past led to higher sugar consumption — ironically worsening the very conditions they were meant to improve.
Clinical Benefits of the Ketogenic Diet
Scientific studies consistently show that ketogenic diets:
Promote greater weight loss than low-fat diets.
Improve insulin sensitivity and lower blood sugar levels.
Reduce inflammation and free radical damage.
Support gut health and immune system function.
Starve cancer cells by removing their sugar fuel.
Improve DNA health and support healthy aging.
Lower the risk of heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes, and neurodegenerative diseases.
It’s no coincidence that individuals adopting a ketogenic lifestyle often report not just better health metrics — but better quality of life.
Aligning Your Health with God’s Design
True healing starts by matching our will with God's will. Our Creator designed our bodies for nourishment, not for the sugar-laden, processed diets so common today. When we embrace natural foods — healthy fats, fresh vegetables, lean proteins — we thrive.
The ketogenic diet isn’t just a tool for weight loss; it's a path back to vibrant health, mental clarity, and longevity. It’s a chance to rebuild, restore, and realign with the health blueprint God gave us.
